Things I Just Don't Understand About Liberals....

Several years back, I considered myself a Democrat.  I would not say that I ever considered myself liberal.  Now, as a Conservative finding my way through this election I have truly tried to understand how the liberal mind works.  I have several liberals in my family and I want to understand where their opinions come from, but I have to say.......I am more perplexed than ever.

Liberals scream and yell about sexism and equal rights for women.  However, when they are actually faced with defending a woman, they chose to ignore abuse because it doesn't fit a certain mold.  They chose to elect a President who talks about equal pay, but pays his female staff less than his male staff. All the while chastising a man who actually picks a woman for the ticket.

Liberals scream and yell about how President Bush is trampling on their rights as Americans. They say President Bush has no right to eavesdrop on terrorists who are calling into our country. However, they see no issue with partisan government officials snooping into a citizen who dared to ask a question of a  presidential candidate.

Liberals scream and yell about hate crimes and racism when an effigy of Barack Obama is hung in the name of Halloween.  However, they see no issue in someone doing the same to an effigy of Sarah Palin.  Personally, I think it's despicable in both cases.

Liberals scream foul when Sarah Palin has the audacity to talk about pro-American parts of the country.  However, liberal Democrats have no issue calling parts of the country racist, redneck, or the ever loving term "fly-over country."

Liberals are scared to death of Republicans "suppressing" the vote by intimidation.  However they have no issue with Card Check which will allow direct intimidation in union voting.  They fight to have the homeless be allowed to use a park bench as a voting address, but fight not to accept military votes that left a signature off of a card that had no place for the signature in the first place.

Liberals are the first ones to join groups like P.E.T.A to defiantly defend animals.  However, have no objection to partial-birth abortion or abortion at all for that matter.

I do not see all Democrats as Liberals.  I believe they are a different breed to say the least.  I have more in common with the moderate Democrats than I would like to admit.  However, I believe that it is the part of the party that I listed above that has now taken over.  I only hope that those moderates with whom I have more common ground are the ones with the louder screams should Obama win this election.

I think I love you. ;>

My thoughts exactly.
"The Democratic Party left me, I didn't leave the Democratic Party."

Well said, thank you!

Have watched C-span and I'm not impressed with the liberal leaders in congress like Pelosi and Reid.
These two do what's politically right and do not put country first.
Case in point was the shelved energy bill last summer !
They waited untill the polls showed McCain gaining traction with his energy proposals then they eliminated the congressional ban on offshore drilling this Fall.

The thing about Libs is that they'll follow anybody who rings their chimes. They don't think intellectually -- it's all about how they feel emotionally. Trouble is, the rest of us have to suffer for it.

I’ve been saying that “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, they left me” ever since the Primary was stolen from Hillary. Although a Pittsburgher, I currently vote in Florida and when they discounted my vote for Hillary and gave Obama Hillary delegates in Michigan, I finally made the choice to jump ship to Independent. My family are still staunch Democrats in Pittsburgh but are not voting for Obama so we are still a united family. I noticed that the next generation of voters in our family are not staying in the Democratic Party either and are also not voting for Obama.

I always thought the Democrats were for the working people, but they have been taken over by self-serving corrupt members both in the House and the Senate - - but hopefully, not in the Whitehouse. Obama may not be measuring for the drapes, but Nancy Pelosi certainly is. Her first 100 days is going to set our country back for the next 20 yrs. and disarm our military to the point of extinction while we continue to be dependent on foreign countries for oil, food and clothing. The remaining companies will be leaving the U.S. and what’s left will be outsourced - - - I wonder how long it will take Joe, the plumber from India, to get here after the service call (do you think he will charge for traveling time by the hour or by the mile?).

I would just encourage you to avoid absolutes.
It would be just as easy to identify conservatives who sometimes seem to contradict themselves.
The contradictions are there, no question, but I think you have to look at the context those statements or behaviors occur in.
I have decided life is not neat and clean. Human behavior is not black and white, While there may be reasons to desire that everyone adhered to their ideologies perfectly I suspect it rarely happens.

Great post, Stacy! You've captured the hypocrisy that is liberalism quite succinctly. I know many Democrats who are not liberals, but they continue to vote for Dems because they're stuck thinking that they care for the "little people." Yeah, they care to keep you little, poor, and angry.

Love the blog!

Teri,

I know from past experience Stacy doesn't like partisan bickering in the comments but I think you illustrate the point of my first reply.
I know Republican "Values Voters" who include Pro-Life as a reason for voting yet they seem unaffected by the deaths of 100,000civilians in an unnecessary war in Iraq.
One might argue that concern for the sanctity of life ceases when the infant exits the womb.

I too was a member of the Democratic Party for a long time and I also feel as if the Democratic Party left me. I've never considered myself liberal and I honestly don't understand why they think the way they do. There's nothing logical about so many of the opinions they hold so near and dear to their hearts.

There was an excellent article from the Christian Science Monitor by Donald Boudreaux entitled "Is Barack Obama Really a Socialist?" and in it, he includes a great quote from longtime Socialist Party of America presidential candidate Norman Thomas: "The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened."

I pray with all my heart that he's not right, but in the meantime, I hope Stacy and everyone else that is able to sit down and have a rational discussion with someone who claims to be a liberal (often easier said than done, I know) will do so. Perhaps if we can start to make a few people really THINK instead of FEEL, we can begin to bring about honest change in this nation--not the spurious, empty, liberal feel-good change the Obama campaign has promised.

Every page at my.barackobama.com carries the disclaimer, “Content on blogs in My.BarackObama represents the opinions of community members and in no way should be interpreted as endorsed or approved by the campaign.” Exercise of editorial control, however, makes the owner of an Internet discussion forum responsible for the content. It is now a matter of proven record that my.barackobama.com has exercised such control and is therefore responsible for sanctioning (tolerating) hate speech against Jews, pro-Clinton African-Americans, and even women (noting that numerous postings called Clinton a “bitch,” with one adding that Clinton’s candidacy shows
http://www.israpundit.com/2008/?p=1436

women are not fit to hold public office).
During this race, not once did I see Barack Obama play the race card. Sure, he has addressed that other people played it for him, but no one has played their cards better than Mrs. Clinton. Crying, playing victim, and being a villianous bitch all showed that women are not ready to take office yet.
Obama's camp treats women like Muslim men do.....

now you know why i left the party...

it is hard when you are middle of the road, and are forced into one of two parties. (for the most part)

I think this is why we are seeing a split in the Dems this year. The Hillary supporter that went to McCain are appalled by the very behaviors you mentioned. And the Obama supporters are the ones guitly of the behaviors you mentioned.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Where I have never considered myself Democrat I do believe there is a difference between a Democrat and a liberal. You are right on the money.
