Birth Control Will Save Our Economy!

Just when you think you have heard the most ridiculous thing you can hear come out of Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, she goes and gives you something else to shake your head at. Careful, after you read this you won't just be shaking your head, but banging it against a hard surface.

The Speaker is defending a move to add birth control funding to the new economic stimulus package. Pelosi claims that "contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government." According to Drudge,

The revelation came during an exchange Sunday morning on ABC's THIS WEEK.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning
services. How is that stimulus?

PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost.
The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for
children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states
meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned,
the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal
government.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?

PELOSI: No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the
downturn in our economy.

If Republicans do not take a stand against this pork-filled bill, what will they take a stand against? President Obama is set to meet tomorrow morning with the entire Republican caucus to discuss the same stimulus bill. How the bill looks after this meeting, will demonstrate President Obama's true level of reaching across the aisle.

If the bill still looks as it does now, we will have at least a few more years of hearing Pelosi's ludicrous explanations..........................and more than a few head banging headaches.

[Facepalm]

Things that seem to have slipped her mind:

1. Free birth control is already readily available, and has been for some time.

2. The ability to use it properly does not depend on the price tag. Free or not, people will still leave condoms in their wallets for three years before using them or take antibiotics while they're on the pill without a backup method, or not bother in the heat of the moment *just once.*

3. Believe it or not, people who cannot afford children still have them voluntarily because they know if they can't pay for their food or shelter, well there's government money for that.

Good post.

Stacy,

There is much in the Stimulus Bill that is good and would indeed provide a boost to our economy. Unfortunately, idiocies like this (the contraceptive provision and others like it) give pundits something to seize upon and use to proclaim the whole thing a waste.

Personally, I hope they cut the pork and keep moving foward with those items that would be worthy investments(upgrades to the electric grid as a good example).

Warmest Regards,

Pelosi is such a nut job! She decides this AFTER she popped out 15 kids? Ok, more like 5 : ) I can see the pissing contest between her and obama starting.

Just found your blog - love it :)

Pelosi is an embarrassment. Especially to the Catholic church she supposedly attends. Makes me sad :(

While I think that contraception could help eliminate costs in theory, as it eliminates more kids on the welfare system, it still sends a message that we will not require people to be responsible for their own behavior, whether it is paying for the pill or the baby. This administration seems to want to punish the people who are responsible and let all the people that are not go free from being responsible for their own behavior. As a psychology student, I know that this is counterproductive, and will cause more problems in the future. And Nancy Pelosi has proven herself to be one of the biggest dingbats in Washington. I say one because we still have to deal with Emanuel and Kennedy, of course. Very nice blog! Thank you for letting people know that not all women have to submit to a specific party in order to be feminists.
